IonQ to Open a 65,000 Square Foot Manufacturing Facility in Washington State

New IonQ Facility in Bothell, Washington. Credit: IonQ

IonQ previously mentioned a plan to establish a manufacturing facility in the Seattle area in their Q2 Earning Release and conference call and they have now announced it will be located in a 65,000 square foot (about 6,000 square meter) facility in Bothell, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. This facility will become IonQ's primary production engineering facility and will also house the company's second data center. This location makes a lot of sense for IonQ since their machines are already available on the cloud services of Amazon, Microsoft, and Google which also have facilities in the area. IonQ is also working with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), also located in Washington state, to develop a sustainable, perpetual source of barium qubits which will be used in IonQ’s next generation quantum processors. There is also a good potential talent pool available from nearby universities including the University of Washington, Washington State University, and the Westerm Washington University. In addition, their is a vibrant high tech and photonics industry based in the Pacific Northwest that could be helpful to IonQ's efforts in the future. Additional information about IonQ's plans for this facility can be seen in a press release available here.
