Although there are many summer intern programs in quantum technology available for graduate students at various organizations there are far fewer summer internships that are open to undergraduate students. Here are two we are aware of that are now accepting applications for summer internships this summer.
The first is sponsored by the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) and is called the Open Quantum Initiative (OQI) Undergraduate Fellowship. It will last from June 10, 2022 to August 19, 2022 and will include in-person research experience at one of the CQE member organizations including the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Northwestern University, and Ohio State University. Students will work with faculty and senior researchers on challenging research projects and also be able to interact and participate in virtual seminars with the other members of their cohort during the summer research period and throughout the following academic year. Selected fellows will receive a stipend of $6000, a travel allowance (up to $1000), and on-campus housing during their summer research appointment. The deadline to apply for this program is February 11, 2022 and you can view a program description and learn how to apply on a CQE webpage here.
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) also is sponsoring Quantum Computing Summer School Fellowship program available to upper division undergraduate students and early graduate students in all scientific disciplines. This program will begin on June 6th, 2022, last for 10 weeks, and take place at LANL in Los Alamos, New Mexico. It will begin with a two week lecture period with talks by several senior quantum researchers from industry and academia and then proceed to an 8 week research project on quantum computing. For the research project, each student will be paired with a LANL mentor who will propose project topics and provide guidance. Each project will involve some hands-on programming of a quantum computer (either Rigetti's, IBM’s, or D-Wave’s). This program will also include a stipend which can range from $7,500 to $13,000 depending upon the academic rank (junior, senior, 1st year graduate student, etc.). of the student. The deadline to apply for this program is January 17, 2022 and you can learn more details about it and see how to apply on a webpage here.
