The quantum tech stack is an emerging set of layers to deliver real quantum business advantage. As the underlying technologies mature and product delivery grows, we take a look at what currently makes up this stack. We then propose a framework for how to think about build, partner, buy decisions and how this changes over time.

First, we have to look at what the applications might be, as quantum tech is set to have a wide impact and an unusually diverse one. The below picture of the global economy is drawn roughly to scale in proportion to global GDP.
Though the potential impacts of quantum computing are widespread, notice that flagship applications such as Cryptanalysis (breaking common current cryptographic codes such as the Internet’s RSA), and Quantum Simulation (for materials science or quantum chemistry) will actually find direct use in fairly specific areas. We only know for certain how to make these applications work when we have large FTQC devices, which are likely still many years off. Variational approaches to rescue these applications for the NISQ era remain unproven.
